The BLS Coin Collectors Club: Official History
Thursday 5th September 1991
EVENTS
The BLS Coin Collectors Club was founded on this day at Barley Lane School in south-west England.
Later on in the Club's history I would start keeping far more detailed records, but during these early days, all I can glean for sure about it is that several people in my class joined, I gave them all several coins to start their collections, and the oldest of these was an 1898 penny that I gave to a member we'll refer to here as "JW". Names will not be given in this public History in order to protect the privacy of those early Club members.
Other early members at the time included "WT", "DH", "CR" and "DP".
ANALYSIS
I was thirteen years old when I began it and had very little idea about how to run a club, or how to do business as part of one. This lack of knowledge would come back time after time to bite me in the butt; however, I have nothing but fond memories of the Club's formative era, despite its many problems.
According to a piece of paper I had written on 17th May of 1991, I had over 1300 coins in my collection, although by the start of the Coin Club the figure quoted was usually around 1500.
